There is produce in this world -- in this very county -- that you have never tasted and may never have the chance to taste.
It's not easy being The Bee's food columnist. I spend grueling hours flipping through magazines and searching Web sites, seeking recipes to e-mail to the paper's recipe testers. On top of that, I actually have to cook these recipes I'm paid for my time and serve the results to my family for dinner.
I am telling everyone I know about this new pasta sauce from Trader Joe's. It's called Italian tomato starter sauce, and it's a simple blend of tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and a little salt. That's it. Nothing fancy. The idea is to add your own embellishments (meatballs, cheese, etc.), but our family gobbles it up just as it is on top of spaghetti. It tastes fresh, and it is relatively low in sodium compared to other prepared pasta sauces. Cost: $1.49. Trader Joe's is at 3250 Dale Road in Modesto.
